Every issue provides data and insights on:
• Seaborne trade
• Emerging trends affecting maritime transport
• Fleet ownership and registration
• Shipbuilding and demolitions
• Freight rates
• Liner shipping connectivity
• Port traffic
• Legal and regulatory developments
• A topical issue covered in a special chapter.
This release contains the 2023 volume, as well as all the volumes issued by UNCTAD from 1968 to 2022 and it is useful to everyone interested in the important developments in the shipping industry during the latest 55 years. Maritime transport is the backbone of international trade and the global economy as around 80 per cent of global trade by volume and over 70 per cent of global trade by value are carried by sea and are handled by ports worldwide. The aim of this professional magazine is to foster the transparency of maritime markets and analyse relevant developments.
The 2023 edition covers data and events from January 2022 until June 2023. UNCTAD has made any possible effort to reflect the most recent developments. Since 2014, the magazine does not include printed statistical annexes. UNCTAD maritime statistics are accessible via the URLs mentioned on page XI. The 2023 edition concentrates on the effect of changing patterns of trade and the resulting increase in the average haul on the various areas of the International Maritime sector, and this makes it extremely interesting to read and study. Moreover, extensive data sets and analysis show how decarbonization, digitalization, and market consolidation require novel and collaborative policy responses. The Review of Maritime Transport 2023 provides the necessary assessment.
