Year: 2018 Language: english Author: UNCTAD Genre: Research papers Publisher: UNCTAD Edition: First ISBN: UNCTAD/DTL/2018/1 Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 97 Description: 1. This special commemorative issue is timely and auspicious covering the most important developments that took place from 1968 to 2018, as the 50th anniversary is taking place at the intersection of the following developments: a) The anniversary coincides with the world community committing to achieving a sustainable development path, a climate-friendly world and prosperity for all. b) It also coincides with early stages of the Fourth Industrial revolution driven by digitalization, with its myriad of challenges and opportunities. c) It is also taking place at a time of growing trade policy risks that could undermine a multilateral rule-based trading system and dampen the demand for maritime transport, which handles over 80 per cent of world trade volumes. Together, these new realities underscore the imperative for UNCTAD to reflect on how best the Review can continue to report on relevant developments and generate useful insights and requisite data that underpin evidence-based maritime transport policy-making. 2. The present commemorative issue examines among other issues: a) The perspective of a Global Maritime Transport Regulatory Agency and any future developments in Maritime Transport. b) The perspective of Trade and Cargo interests. c) The perspective of the Shipping Industry that emerges from a 10-year shipping downturn. d) The perspective of the Port Industry with a forecast of the factors that are expected to shape the port sector in the next 50 years. e) The Maritime Transport Economist’s perspective on if we are smart enough to build a new future for Maritime Transport. f) The Academic perspective on the implications of the above mentioned issues on Education and Research. 3. All in all, this issue is an interesting addition to the annual reviews issued from 1968 to 2018.
