Environmentally friendly inland waterway ship design for Danube river
Year: 2010 Language: english Author: WWF International Genre: Research papers Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 111 Description: WWF-DCP has been active in activities that aim to promote sustainable inland navigation on the Danube since 2004. We cooperate with network (WWF) and NGO partners in several Danube countries to meet project objectives. Our overall objective is to ensure that the EU and Danube countries see its waterways as living rivers, not mere as transport canals. WWF’s main activities focus to: (a) demonstrate the Danube to be a living example for sustainable inland waterway transport in Europe and in other international river basins, (b) fight against the urgent threats caused by traditional navigation models and, at the same time, (c) provide alternative waterway concepts that consider both global emissions and local impacts on river ecosystems equally. Over the past two years, we have been lobbying and campaigning to “fit the ships to the river, not the river to the ships”. While this has been a visible and motivating slogan, we seek more information on ship technology to fine tune our arguments and back up our policy and campaign work.
