Oppurtunities and Challenges: Introducing New LEO Networks to the Maritime Industry
Year: 2023 Language: english Author: GT Maritime Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 9 Description: It is almost 50 years since satellite communication first came to the maritime sphere and since then there have been many developments and advances. The new generation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) systems is looking to be another leap into the future for communications between ship and shore and they do look as if they provide a solution to some of the demands of ship operators, crews and other stakeholders. New LEO networks definitely offer a quantum leap in crew communication possibilities. Satisfying a demand that is growing and making a seafaring career more attractive than it might possibly have been otherwise. With respect to commercial communications, not being approved for GMDSS and not available globally, the new services will not satisfy mandatory maritime communication carriage and operational requirements. High speed internet and data transfer is better suited to some ships than others. Operators must decide on economic grounds what are ‘must haves’ and what are not. Communications are considered good for crew welfare but the subscribed limits of one or five terabytes could easily be exceed early if crew make maximum use of streaming services. Can the system set limits for individual users and if not, how can this be managed equitably to avoid problems among crew members.
