The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS): An operational handbook
Year: 2009 Language: english Author: Adam Weintrit Genre: Reference book Publisher: Taylor & Francis Edition: - ISBN: 978-0-415-48246-2 Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 1051 Description: Today’s mariner is looking for something with the same standards of quality as the traditional standard paper chart, but which meets the demands of a new navigational era. Electronic navigation, although still relatively new and unfamiliar, is becoming increasingly more commonplace, particularly onboard commercial vessels. This guide aims at providing answers to some of the most commonly asked questions regarding electronic charts (ENC, RNC, DNC) and electronic chart systems (ECDIS, RCDS, ECS). The revision of SOLAS, Chapter V, which entered into force on 1 July 2002, has firmly established the electronic navigational chart as part of the international maritime safety system. Its possible recognition as a paper chart equivalent confirms the considerable safety benefits provided by the official Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). Following the earlier adoption of the International Convention STCW 78/95 and IMO model training courses to assist in the implementation of the Convention and the associated IMO Assembly resolutions, a number of IAMU Member Universities had suggested that IAMU should develop model training courses on higher academic level to assist in achieving a more rapid transfer of information and skills regarding new developments in marine technology. The provision of model courses could help instructors improve the quality of their existing courses and enhance their effectiveness in meeting the requirements of the IAMU. The following structure of the handbook was applied: each chapter, sub-chapter and paragraph ends with a few of the most representative slides from the Author’s PowerPoint presentation of the IAMU Model Course on the Operational Use of ECDIS instead of the classical form of illustrations. A CD ROM with the full version of the PowerPoint presentation is part of this book. To avoid language problems, this handbook is the mosaic of thousands of different citations sourced from more than 1000 different text items (official and unofficial documents, books, articles, papers, publications, stickers, websites and various manufacturers’ instruction manuals) mentioned in the references list in the Bibliography, including the text on ECDIS and electronic charts from the last edition of the Bowditch American Practical Navigator and web sites of the IMO, IHO, IEC, NOAA, UKHO, AHS, CHS, NHS, SHOM, NGA, BSH, JHA, JCG, ECC, MCA, IC-ENC, PrimarStavanger, Transas Marine, PC Maritime, Caris, OSI, C-Map (now Jeppesen), SevenCs, ChartWorld, NSI, Morintech Navigation, Navionics, Thomas Gunn and many others. The book was written during a period of 5 years between 2003 and 2008 and it was extremely difficult to keep the book fully corrected and up-dated all the time. This book is intended for those who want to know about the selection, implementation, operational use, benefits, and management of ECDIS and ECS systems, but do not need to know all the technical details of how an ECDIS/GIS actually ‘works’. Presented in this book is the IAMU model course on training in the operational use of ECDIS, the first model course, and may be used by staff and students of any maritime university, navigational faculty and training institution as alternative or supplement to the IMO Model Course 1.27. Description: Today’s mariner is looking for something with the same standards of quality as the traditional standard paper chart,
but which meets the demands of a new navigational era.
Electronic navigation, although still relatively new and unfamiliar, is becoming increasingly more commonplace,
particularly onboard commercial vessels. This guide aims at providing answers to some of the most commonly asked
questions regarding electronic charts (ENC, RNC, DNC) and electronic chart systems (ECDIS, RCDS, ECS).
The revision of SOLAS, Chapter V, which entered into force on 1 July 2002, has firmly established the electronic navigational chart as part of the international maritime safety system. Its possible recognition as a paper chart
equivalent confirms the considerable safety benefits provided by the official Electronic Chart Display and Information
Systems (ECDIS).
Following the earlier adoption of the International Convention STCW 78/95 and IMO model training courses to
assist in the implementation of the Convention and the associated IMO Assembly resolutions, a number of IAMU
Member Universities had suggested that IAMU should develop model training courses on higher academic level to
assist in achieving a more rapid transfer of information and skills regarding new developments in marine technology.
The provision of model courses could help instructors improve the quality of their existing courses and enhance their
effectiveness in meeting the requirements of the IAMU.
The following structure of the handbook was applied: each chapter, sub-chapter and paragraph ends with a few
of the most representative slides from the Author’s PowerPoint presentation of the IAMU Model Course on the Operational Use of ECDIS instead of the classical form of illustrations. A CD ROM with the full version of the PowerPoint
presentation is part of this book.
To avoid language problems, this handbook is the mosaic of thousands of different citations sourced from more
than 1000 different text items (official and unofficial documents, books, articles, papers, publications, stickers, websites and various manufacturers’ instruction manuals) mentioned in the references list in the Bibliography, including
the text on ECDIS and electronic charts from the last edition of the Bowditch American Practical Navigator and web
sites of the IMO, IHO, IEC, NOAA, UKHO, AHS, CHS, NHS, SHOM, NGA, BSH, JHA, JCG, ECC, MCA, IC-ENC, PrimarStavanger, Transas Marine, PC Maritime, Caris, OSI, C-Map (now Jeppesen), SevenCs, ChartWorld, NSI, Morintech
Navigation, Navionics, Thomas Gunn and many others. The book was written during a period of 5 years between
2003 and 2008 and it was extremely difficult to keep the book fully corrected and up-dated all the time.
This book is intended for those who want to know about the selection, implementation, operational use, benefits,
and management of ECDIS and ECS systems, but do not need to know all the technical details of how an ECDIS/GIS
actually ‘works’.
Presented in this book is the IAMU model course on training in the operational use of ECDIS, the first model
course, and may be used by staff and students of any maritime university, navigational faculty and training institution
as alternative or supplement to the IMO Model Course 1.27.
