Описание: Jane's Merchant Ships is, principally, a recognition guide which uses an identification system based on ship types and certain external features of a ship. Only trading types, that is those which carry cargo and/or passengers as their principal occupation, are eligible for inclusion. They must also have an overall length of 70 m (230ft) or more. Despite this, a large fleet of ships exists within these restrictions.
This fleet will grow by approximately a thousand ships annually and this is not always balanced by scrapping of older ships, although this has been the case in 1998 and should be in 1999. There are probably between 6,000 and 7,000 ships renamed each year, which accounts for a great deal of the amendments to the book. The upgrading and rebuilding of older vessels is also a significant factor in updating. This often increases in recessionary times, when the cost of building new ships can be prohibitive. Passenger ships are particularly affected by this. For example, older femes working in northern Europe are often sold for further service in the Mediterranean or Middle East. The differences in climate and the nature of the trade usually necessitate rebuilding, which can often radically alter their appearance. Cruise shipping, a market that has been expanding for some years, is also considerably affected by this phenomenon. Many older ships are used in this trade and market trends and safety regulations necessitate a great deal of rebuilding. Also, many of these older vessels started life carrying cargo as well as passengers. Now that they are only used for cruising, most of the cargo gear with which they were originally fitted has been removed and the large holds converted for other purposes.
