Year: 1980 Language: english Author: B.E.M.Thomas Publisher: STANFORD MARITIME LONDON Edition: 1st ISBN: 0.540-07354-7 Format: PDF Quality: OCR without errors Pages count: 157 Description: Prior to writing this book the author carried out extensive research into the management of maintenance aboard mer chant ships. He has studied the work and the points of view of the ship operator (at all levels), the manufacturer, the consul tant and, perhaps most important, the shipboard personnel. One of the main conclusions arising from this research is that there is a very serious need for more and better training into the ‘how’ and, equally important, the ‘why?’ of maintenance management. This book is intended to help to fulfil such a need. It is aimed primarily at the seafarer, since it is upon him that the final onus rests, and also at shore-based superintendents as well as other ship-operator personnel, who help to devise and run ship maintenance management systems. It is felt that the management of spares should be an integral part of maintenance management and is therefore also considered. Many shipping companies have installed planned main tenance and spares control systems on their ships, some covering just the engine room and some the entire ship, including paintwork and electronic equipment. The levels of sophistication and complexity of these maintenance and spares systems vary enormously. The levels of effectiveness and acceptance by sea staff also vary widely, often without any obvious connection. It is hoped that this book will help those involved to understand the philosophies behind their companies’ maintenance policies and to make the most of those policies, whether they involve comprehensive planned maintenance and spares control systems or, at the other end of the scale, no formal systems at all but maintenance left to the chief engineers’ or mates’ discretion.

Description: Prior to writing this book the author carried out extensive
research into the management of maintenance aboard mer chant ships. He has studied the work and
the points of view of the ship operator (at all levels), the manufacturer, the consul tant and,
perhaps most important, the shipboard personnel. One of the main conclusions arising from this
research is that there is a very serious need for more and better training into the ‘how’ and,
equally important, the ‘why?’ of maintenance management.
This book is intended to help to fulfil such a need. It is aimed primarily at the seafarer, since
it is upon him that the final onus rests, and also at shore-based superintendents as well as other
ship-operator personnel, who help to devise and run ship maintenance management systems.
It is felt that the management of spares should be an integral part of maintenance management and
is therefore also considered.
Many shipping companies have installed planned main tenance and spares control systems on their
ships, some covering just the engine room and some the entire ship, including paintwork and
electronic equipment. The levels of sophistication and complexity of these maintenance and spares
systems vary enormously. The levels of effectiveness and acceptance by sea staff also vary widely,
often without any obvious connection. It is hoped that this book will help those involved to
understand the philosophies behind their companies’ maintenance policies and to make the most of
those policies, whether they involve comprehensive planned maintenance and spares control systems
or, at the other end of the scale, no formal systems at all but maintenance left to the chief
engineers’ or mates’ discretion.
