Description: The 1980s are proving to be one of the most interesting periods in the postwar history of the Royal Navy, for not only have British maritime forces fought a 'war' some 8,000 miles from home ports (and Out of the NATO Area at that) but re-equipment with high technology systems is giving it the greatest capability ever. In terms of numbers of ships the RN is still in the top five 'blue water' navies; in terms of operational effectiveness and training, it must rank as top of the league. This picture album is a compilation of illustrations showing the way in which the Royal Navy is moving in the last quarter of the century, particularly from the point of view of equipment and of modifications to warship designs. With the continued presence of British warships off the Falkland Islands and the fact that at the time of writing Argentina has yet to sign a peace agreement, it has not been possible to go into too great detail, but the reader will be able to understand the basic philosophy behind the improvements in close-range weapons and specialist sensors.
