Each chapter is the result of much critical discussion and careful checking. Some have contributed more than others, but no one wished to be singled out from the name which unites us all - Glenans. The course is a synthesis, neither an encyclopedia, nor a mere compilation. We have only included what seems to be essential in the experience of succeeding generations of sailors and instructors - during more than a quarter of a century at Glenans. Our aim is to enable the beginner virtually to learn on his own. Les Glenans only claims to offer the right background to those who really want to learn how to sail, and is no narrowly structured school with examinations and diplomas. By the same token our manual aims to give friendly encouragement and allay your anxieties without, we hope, forgetting to warn you of the dangers. The approach, at least in the beginning, applies equally to someone working alone and to a crew of two, and that is why, for instance, there is no mention of that maid-of-all-work at sailing schools, the Caravelle, because it is not a boat for a beginner on his own. We hope too that the manual will be useful to those who have already done some sailing as a means of checking and extending their knowledge, and getting real feeling for the whole business. It is in fact quite a comprehensive work. The experience of many seas - from the North Cape to the Canaries, from Ireland to the coast of Poland, from Gibraltar to Turkey - has enabled Glenans skippers to broaden their knowledge and pass it on. But certain subjects, like astro-navigation for instance, are not covered since we consider that there are already excellent books on that subject and we have nothing to add.
