Year: 1993 Language: english Author: Roger Ffooks Genre:Book Format: PDF Quality: eBook Number of pages: 165 Description: This publication charts the history of LNG transportation by sea, from the early tank and ship designs to the development of membranes and spheres. It discusses the involvement of IMO and Classification Societies and offers a look ahead to the potential future developments within the LNG industry.
Contents
Sea borne transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a young industry. Young enough for many of those who are still active in this fascinating segment of international shipping to remember very well the first searching steps to find a solution to what was a major technical challenge. A number of developments have transpired since the first edition of "Natural Gas by Sea" was published in 1979, and with the continually increasing interest in natural gas as the environmentally preferable fossil fuel, it is timely that Roger Ffooks has taken the opportunity to bring us up to date on what is happening in LNG shipping. The revision provides some fascinating insight into how the different designs for this most advanced marine technology were developed and the intense rivalry between the developers and licensors of the competing technologies, frequently with the gas conferences as their battleground. It was a time of achievement and reward, but also frustration and disappointment when progress was slow. The potential danger in handling a liquid at these ultra low temperatures and the huge investment necessary to implement an LNG project demand a total commitment to safety and reliability. This book demonstrates how this has always dominated the thinking of the people involved and how special safety features have been incorporated in the design of these ships. The importance of safety and reliability and the recognition that the failure of one operator would be a serious setback to all the others was the background against which the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO) came into being in 1979. It is vital that the outstanding safety record of LNG shipping is maintained in order to permit the considerable increase in the size of the LNG fleet which will be required to serve the world's increasing need for this clean source of energy. The book provides a valuable introduction to LNG transportation technology for students as well as professionals and is highly recommended reading for anybody who would like to understand the problems of sea borne transportation of liquefied natural gas.
