Description: This workbook has been written to accompany the second video in the First Aid series, Medical First Aid (STCW Code Section A -VI/4-1).
The video and this workbook will assist with the underpinning knowledge of fi rst aid but it is important to remember that fi rst aid requires practical skills. This programme supports, but does not replace, statutory fi rst aid training required by seafarers under the STCW code.
The first part in the First Aid Series, Elementary First Aid, dealt with the basic immediate first aid that all seafarers need to be familiar with, and will have undertaken training in, to satisfy the fi rst aid training requirements in accordance with the STCW code. (STCW Code Section A -VI/1-3).
It showed the fi rst aid that all seafarers need to know to be able to manage a situation when it occurs and take the necessary actions to potentially save a life. These are:
★ Managing the incident
★ Resuscitation techniques
★ The unconscious casualty
★ Monitoring a casualty
★ Shock
★ Bleeding
★ Burns
★ Moving a casualty
This second part in the series looks at a variety of injuries and illnesses that seafarers may need to have knowledge of. It includes major and minor injury as well as dealing with sudden illness. It covers fi rst aid training requirements in accordance with the STCW Code (STCW Code Section A -VI/4-1).
It is important to remember that some fi rst aid situations will always need immediate action to be taken, but that the continuing fi rst aid will be carried out by offi cers on board ship who have completed additional fi rst aid and medical training. The fi rst aider then becomes an assistant in the situation and follows instructions given. In some instances action may not be taken until Radio Medical Advice (RMA) has been sought.
In all the examples shown in the accompanying video, the fi rst aider will always carry out DR ABC. They will assess the scene to establish what happened and to ensure it is safe, and they will assess, treat, and monitor the casualty.
