Goetschalckx Genre: Dictionary Publisher: COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES Edition: 1 ISBN: 92-825-9787-3 Format: PDF Quality: Scanned pages + text layer Pages count: 544 Description: The subject of the Community's 'Blue Europe' policy is fishing, a sector which has grown in importance since the accession of Spain and Portugal, both considerably involved in the industry. Furthermore, in view of the particularly dangerous nature of certain occupations in fishing, the Commission has set up an ergonomics programme aimed at improving safety on board fishing vessels. For these reasons, which are ones of an essentially political nature, a series of glosssaries on fishing has been planned in cooperation with Directorate-General V (Employment, Social Affairs and Education), Directorate-General XIV (Fisheries), and the Statistical Office. A further reason is a basically linguistic one: the fisherman's vocabulary is extremely rich, often very picturesque and sometimes even earthy. There is no monolingual dictionary which can reflect this richness nor is there any dictionary which can provide equivalent terms in all the Community languages. In the absence of such a work, politicians, specialists and officials have hitherto found it difficult to understand one another, not to mention the problems encountered by translators and interpreters. This glossary deals with fishing vessels and safety on board. Apart from including terminology on the various types of fishing vessels, it considers passive safety (vessel parts and structures, installations on board, stability requirements) and active safety (signals, lifesaving equipment, etc.). The glossary has used as its source of terminology the text of the 'International Convention on Fishing Vessels and Safety on Board' (Torremolinos, 1977), and has been systematically expanded with the help of European experts. It follows the publication in 1987 of a glossary on fishing gear, comprising 377 terms in nine languages (Spanish, Danish, German, Greek, English, French, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese) and accompanied by definitions and illustrations. The terminology represented is highly specialized and difficult to find elsewhere. In order to guarantee maximum reliability, assistance was obtained from prominent national experts. All of this terminology is being fed into Eurodicautom, the Commission's multilingual terminology bank, as the project advances. It is thus also accessible on telematic networks. J. Description: The subject of the Community's 'Blue Europe' policy is fishing, a sector which has grown in
importance since the accession of Spain and Portugal, both considerably involved in the industry.
Furthermore, in view of the particularly dangerous nature of certain occupations in
fishing, the Commission has set up an ergonomics programme aimed at improving safety on
board fishing vessels.
For these reasons, which are ones of an essentially political nature, a series of glosssaries
on fishing has been planned in cooperation with Directorate-General V (Employment, Social
Affairs and Education), Directorate-General XIV (Fisheries), and the Statistical Office. A further
reason is a basically linguistic one: the fisherman's vocabulary is extremely rich, often
very picturesque and sometimes even earthy. There is no monolingual dictionary which can
reflect this richness nor is there any dictionary which can provide equivalent terms in all the
Community languages. In the absence of such a work, politicians, specialists and officials
have hitherto found it difficult to understand one another, not to mention the problems encountered
by translators and interpreters.
This glossary deals with fishing vessels and safety on board. Apart from including terminology
on the various types of fishing vessels, it considers passive safety (vessel parts and
structures, installations on board, stability requirements) and active safety (signals, lifesaving
equipment, etc.). The glossary has used as its source of terminology the text of the 'International
Convention on Fishing Vessels and Safety on Board' (Torremolinos, 1977), and has
been systematically expanded with the help of European experts. It follows the publication
in 1987 of a glossary on fishing gear, comprising 377 terms in nine languages (Spanish, Danish,
German, Greek, English, French, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese) and accompanied by
definitions and illustrations. The terminology represented is highly specialized and difficult to
find elsewhere. In order to guarantee maximum reliability, assistance was obtained from prominent
national experts.
All of this terminology is being fed into Eurodicautom, the Commission's multilingual terminology
bank, as the project advances. It is thus also accessible on telematic networks.
