Year: 2019 Language: english Author: Tom Bensky Genre: History Publisher: n/a Edition: 2nd Format: EPUB Quality: eBook Pages count: n/a Description: Since ancient times, navigation has been a matter of moving from one coast to another. Always in sight of the earth, or losing sight of it for a short time. But, as the sailors entered the ocean, the problem became radically different. All of the great explorers, Colombo, de Gama, Magellan, were essentially “sailing blind”, having no idea where they actually were, as soon as they lost sight of land. While it was not a problem to determine with sufficient accuracy the latitude, longitude was another story. A problem that lasted for about 300 year, finally being solved at the end of the eighteenth century, when precise and reliable chronometers were created. This book takes a scientific look at a problem of time and longitude determination at sea. It summarizes the history of the two main methods, the measurement of time and the methods of lunar. Then deals with the invention of mechanical escapements, the base of the modern clocks, and continues by discussing the application of the measurement of time to celestial navigation. The author is professor of physics at California State University, S. Luis Obispo.
