Description: ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display & Information System) is a system for safe navigation. Its scope
and performance are regulated under SOLAS (International Convention for the Safety of Life at
Sea) by IMO (International Maritime Organization). The scope reads as follows:
① ECDIS, which must display all the information it posts, shall be established by an marine
surveyor who the government has appointed;
② ECDIS provides reliable updates on ENC;
③ Its introduction shall reduce the workload in comparison with the use of conventional
paper charts;
④ ECDIS shall indicate any location of own ships sequentially;
⑤ ECDIS shall display additional information such as RADAR, ARPA, AIS, etc. to monitor
routes; and
⑥ ECDIS shall provide the appropriate alarms and indications for any error from the
apparatus and its displayed information.
As for the performances of ECDIS, IEC/IMO/IHO establishes their standard. The documentation for
the standard reads as follows:
