Switzerland-based container shipping major Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has welcomed MSC Samar, the third vessel in the company’s Gülsün class of 23,000 TEU+ ships, to its fleet.
The naming ceremony for the 23,756 TEU ultra large container vessel (ULCV) was held at the Port of Bremerhaven on September 17, 2019.
MSC Samar is currently on its maiden voyage from Asia to Europe and arrived in Bremerhaven after making a stop in Algeciras, Spain.
The 228,100 dwt newbuilding was completed at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in South Korea in late July 2019, according to data provided by VesselsValue.
Flying the flag of Panama, MSC Samar features a length of 400 meters and a width of 61.5 meters. As its sister vessel MSC Gülsün, MSC Samar is equipped with a next-generation smart dispensing system and hybrid exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers).
Earlier this month, the second vessel in the company’s Gülsün class, MSC Mina, also visited the Port of Bremerhaven while on its Asia-Europe voyage.
The vessels are part of the shipbuilding contract announced in September 2017 when MSC ordered six 23,000 TEU from SHI and another five from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).
