Description: This project investigates the nature and implications of terrorism and contemporary maritime piracy, drawing a comparative analysis on two relevant spheres of conflict: the Gulf of Aden and the Strait of Malacca. In doing so, the research is conducted within two scopes of investigation. On the one hand, the transition from domestic to transnational terrorism is portrayed by the events of 9/11, hereby representing a historical shift in the field of global security. This will be emphasised by the significant progression of jihadism from 1979 to 2015. This study incorporates the use of qualitative discourse analysis, through the prism of a social constructivist approach combined with the concepts of embedded liberalism and neo-patrimonialism. The empirical data relies on the use of illustrative examples: 9/11, the Abu Sayyaf Group, Somalia, the Strait of Malacca, and a host of other secondary examples referring to Northern Ireland’s IRA, Boko Haram in Nigeria and the Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (GAM) in Indonesia. The study finds that the use of violence is a common characteristic of both actors, sharing similar ideological and tactical motives with mutual intentions to create chaos and provoke instability. Meanwhile, the differences are illustrated throughout the fact that terrorist groups’ interests are mainly of political nature, whereas pirates are driven by financial objectives. The dissertation contributes to the literature with the use of a distinct theoretical framework by shedding light on political, economic, social and cultural aspects that constitute the piracy-terrorism nexus.
