Description: This document describes equivalent structural re- quirements for Arctic Class ships as prescribed by the Arctic Shipping Pollution Prevention Regulations (Regulations). Section 11 of the Regulations permits this equivalency. The standard is also made under the authority of the Canada Shipping Act, Section 305.
The Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Act [AWPPA], and the Canada Shipping Act [CSA] have provisions for the making of regulations for the safety of ships and the environment. The Regulations are made solely under the AWPPA, and do not contain provisions for the approval or submission of plans. The authority for the production of plans is contained in section 338(1) of the CSA which is sub-delegated into the Hull Inspection Regulations. For the purpose of this standard, the requirement in the Hull Inspection Regulations for the submission and approval of plans is required by the Board of Steamship Inspection to apply to this Standard. The construction of the ship must comply with the approved arrangements.
