Description: This Handbook is intended to be an introduction to the field of satellite time and frequency transfer and dissemination. The first chapters present an overview of the satellite systems that are used for dissemination of time and frequency signals. With the pre-eminence of global navigation satellite systems such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) and Communications
Satellites in their widespread influence in disseminating Time, chapters describing its generation and relationship to the international time scale are provided. Following the description of the satellite systems is an overview of the generation and maintenance of the international time scale, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This time scale is generated from the contribution of many national timing centres and laboratories.
So a chapter is devoted to describing the makeup and operation of these national timing centres that support the generation and dissemination of the time scale. Time transfer and dissemination between these timing centres and individual users is accomplished by radio transmissions. The effects of relativistic and propagation effects on these transmissions are discussed before the final chapters describing the primary methods of time and frequency transfer in use.
